Yu Murakami, Our Founder & CEO
Yu Murakami founded New York General Group, Inc. and the Murakami Foundation, where he leads business operations and research and development.
He became interested in computers at the age of seven and has independently studied computer science and mathematics for more than 20 years. His principal areas of interest are artificial intelligence and category theory. Believing that category theory offers the optimal approach to achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), he invented Categorical AI.
Categorical AI has outperformed large language models such as GPT-5.1 and Claude Opus 4.5 across various benchmarks, as detailed in its technical report. It has also produced significant results in connection with the artificial intelligence technology entitled “高次元微分演算子を計算するための確率的テンソル縮約ネットワーク(特願2025-046150), for which the Japan Patent Office issued a decision to grant a patent. Categorical AI played a central role in the invention. This represents the first case in Japan in which a patent was approved for “artificial intelligence invented by artificial intelligence.”

These patents constitute a portfolio of world-class technologies. Papers published by leading journals and conferences—including the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, Nature, Neural Information Processing Systems, the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society’s Physical Review Letters, and the International Conference on Learning Representations—as well as patents held by globally renowned universities and corporations, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, International Business Machines Corporation, and Harvard University, have been cited as prior art. The inventions were found to be novel over such prior art and were subsequently approved for patent protection. They have also been cited in patents held by major international corporations and research institutions, including China Telecom, Inspur, and the Academy of Military Science.
Murakami is also a member of organizations including the American Mathematical Society and the American Physical Society, through which he continues to study the mathematics and physics underlying his inventions.
After graduating from Keio University, he began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). While at university, he participated in internships at organizations including PwC and Bain & Company, experiences that sparked his interest in business and finance. He subsequently founded New York General Group, Inc. and the Murakami Foundation in the United States.
He also has experience completing an exit in the United States through the M&A sale—by means of a share-transfer agreement—to a qualified institutional investor of a holding company possessing patent portfolios in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum computing.
He conducts fund-related activities in the capacities of an Accredited Investor (17 C.F.R. § 230.501(a)(5))・Geeignete Gegenpartei (Gesetz über den Wertpapierhandel (Wertpapierhandelsgesetz – WpHG) § 67 Kunden; Verordnungsermächtigung Absatz 2 Nummer 2)・Professional Investor (Securities and Futures Rules, Cap. 571D Cap. 571D §3(c))・適格機関投資家(金融商品取引法第二条に規定する定義に関する内閣府令第十条二十三イ、適格機関投資家の届出を金融庁長官に行った者).
He currently participates, as a qualified institutional investor, in a fund originating from Kyushu University. He has also co-founded a pharmaceutical and food company with Professor Emeritus Takehiko Fujino of Kyushu University and others, and serves as its Chief Executive Officer, with responsibility for formulating its management strategy.
Murakami is currently engaged in a broad range of activities extending beyond artificial-intelligence research and development. These include research and development in nuclear fusion, quantum computing, rockets and satellites, and semiconductors; pharmaceutical research and development conducted in partnership with Reoken; and regional revitalization initiatives undertaken in partnership with the Tsujita Group.
